some comments on medium
an uninformative headline with no capital letters
where to begin? -
how to begin?
i’ll begin with the medium (Medium) using the style i usually write in
when i first looked at Medium i was amazed at the amount of self-reference there was
how to write on Medium
how to succeed
how to build your audience
how to get a lot of followers
how to make money
how i wrote an article a day
it seemed totally wrong and not useful for me - so i cancelled after about a week —
but i wanted some sort of web platform and after much thinking and searching for alternatives i decided on another try —
by refining my ‘recommendation’ - i found that there was a lot of good and interesting writing
(i don’t like most writing so it’s not surprising that i don’t like most of what i read (what is fed to me) on Medium
so i decided to try to use it in my own way
what do i want to do here —
what do i want to get from Medium —
my desire:
1) is to get some attention directed at my website where i am publishing a journal that i’ve been writing for nearly fifty years -
2) to write differently — to show that there are alternatives to the conventional forms of writing
(Medium is mostly about what i’m not)
some notes on my style
i don’t like capital letters (i capitalize Medium to indicate the writing platform)
i don’t like conventional punctuation
i don’t like the sentence / paragraph structure of ‘normal’ writing
i don’t like to write like someone or anyone else
i don’t want a large number of readers
i don’t want to build an audience
i don’t want a large audience — i don’t need a large audience
i don’t want followers —
i want some people to read what i write (‘to follow’ is not a good metaphor)
(i can’t imagine a large audience reading what i’ve written and plan on writing)
i don’t want to make money from my writing —
i think a ‘large’ income is usually a human failure - a moral failure
i don’t like to compete — i don’t like competition
i don’t like self-confidence
i don’t want to influence anyone —
i don’t like the concept of ‘influencing’
i want to inspire & encourage people to to get outside of the framework of ‘writing correctly’
i used to know how to write — fortunately i’ve mostly gotten past that)
i want to succeed but on my own terms
(i find it difficult to differentiate between success and failure)
i want to make text - not sense
i want people to look at my website but if you don’t like my ‘style’ don’t bother with the my journals
i think writing:
should not be concise
should not be clear (charity is a virtue - clarity is a vice)
should not be consistent
should not be coherent
i like ambiguity
