heidegger is important but do any of his ‘books’ belong on the list —
what is a book — a text — are collections or selections ‘a book’
what would make a book better or worse — leaving things out?
interest at different times —
situations (situationism) come to mind — architecture
the telephone book what part does design - shape etc play
butor — the ‘issue’ of translation
——
anyone — any list of people can only know a fragment of the ‘great’ books (collections of great books) —
(this should go near the beginning —)
memory has to play a part — i remember liking some books but not enough to ‘rank’ them <?> —
to compare them to what i’ve read more recently or thought about more recently
——
diaries — what is a book —
most diaries are selections — do the selection make the book —
would different selections or expurgations make a better or worse book —
what are the edges of the text — the margins
on the edges or margins of fiction
sebald butor burroughs
what about art books or photography books — (relate to diaries & selections) —
can a monograph or selection of works be a ‘great book’ — should one -
could one say /write ‘made’ ‘written’ — a great collection of photographs with some text — ?
saying/writing this wouldn’t be a great book without the text — or without the illustrations
is art non fiction —
(i’ve extended to book and not non-fiction (another margin or edge))
—
are some of the books on my shelves among the 100 best — how would i know —
how do/does the writer[s] / author[s] (always question authority) know
that they haven’t left something out because they haven’t read it —
can something that’s almost never read be on the list —
what difference will a different time-frame make — what will be forgotten —
and by whom — what will be (what’s the word — ‘brought back’)
